The Truth on what causes Acne

Several skin rashes are classified as acne and some of the most common are: acne vulgaris (commonly occurs during puberty), acne cosmetica (triggered by cosmetics) and acne conglobata (chronic abscesses and boils).

The hormones that cause physical maturation, cause the sebaceous (oil) glands of the skin to produce more sebum (oil).Sebaceous glands are found together with a hair shaft in a unit called a sebaceous follicle. During puberty, the cells of the skin that line the follicle begin to shed more rapidly. When cells mix with the increased amount of sebum being produced, they can plug the opening of the follicle. Meanwhile, the sebaceous glands continue to produce sebum, and the follicle swells up with sebum.

Moreover, a normal skin bacteria called P. acnes, begins to multiply rapidly in the clogged hair follicle that produces irritating substances that can cause inflammation. In this way Acne is formed and worsened.

Adult Acne - Sudden onset or continuation of acne, during adulthood may result from conditions like hormone imbalances, stress, pollution or medications.

Acne cosmetica results from the application of certain cosmetics to the face and it can affect anyone who uses this products. Thus it’s best to stick to formulations that are designed for sensitive skin, or those that are non-comedogenic and hypoallergenic because they are gentler

Acne conglobata is a severe form of acne characterized by pronounced scarring and skin damage, inflammation, deep abscesses, and blackheads that appear over most of the body.

Acne mallorca is a type of acne caused by the ultra-violet rays of the sun, and appears as a rash on the neck, chest and arms Whilst acne excoriee comes from picking, rubbing, or squeezing pimples. Constant friction, rubbing, chaffing and pressure on the skin can cause or exacerbate a type of acne called acne mechanica.

Acne FAQ’s:

1. What causes Acne?
The hormones that cause physical maturation also cause the sebaceous (oil) glands of the skin to produce more sebum (oil). During puberty, the cells of the skin that line the follicle begin to shed more rapidly. In people who develop acne, the cells shed and stick together more so than in people who do not develop acne. Meanwhile, the sebaceous glands continue to produce sebum, and the follicle swells up with sebum.

2. Can stress lead to Acne breakouts?
Stress can have many physiologic effects on the body, including changes in hormones that may lead to acne. However, if the acne is being treated effectively, stress is not likely to have much impact on majority of people.

3. Despite face – washing several times – why does acne reoccur?
Acne is actually caused by a variety of biologic factors that are beyond the control of washing. So, washing alone will not clear up or prevent acne. Washing does, however, help remove excess surface oils and dead skin cells. So, a recommended twice a day gently face wash with a mild soap is usually all that is necessary.

4. How should I alter my diet to prevent or treat Acne?
It is believed that certain foods, particularly chocolate, colas, peanuts, shellfish and some fatty foods causes acne, but there is no scientific evidence. So, to be on the safer side avoids any foods which seem to worsen your acne and, for your overall health, eat a balanced diet.

Look for "noncomedogenic" cosmetics and cleansers that are formulated so that they will not cause acne. A dermatologist or pharmacist should also be consulted before you zero in on any new product for your skin.

How Acne and Stress are interrelated?

Some people say that acne has noting to do with stress. However some scientific facts revealed that stress is indirectly linked to acne i.e.

• At the time of stress, the secretion of hormones likes adrenaline and noradrenaline from adrenal glands gets stimulated. However these hormones are produced along with another hormone androgen which enhances the production of sebum responsible for the development of acne.

• Stress in many situations can slow down the healing process, which also applies to acne.

• A person under stress usually starts eating uncontrollably and consumes unhealthy food items (oily and high calorie diet) which increases the chance of acne. It also has a damaging effect on skin.

Cause and Types of Acne!!

Studies reveled that acne occur when there is a problem with the hair follicle. Sebaceous glands are located on the hair follicle, chest, back, neck and face. These sebaceous glands manufacture sebum which is an oily substance responsible for maintaining the moisture of your skin and hair.

Thus when there is adequate production of sebum, acne does not occur but when there is more production of sebum due to hormonal changes, acne occurs. These hormonal changes occur mainly when children go through puberty.

Androgens are the hormones that are responsible for production of more sebum. These are male hormones which are more prevalent in males than females. Now during puberty, most of the people have dead skin cells from their hair follicles which when mixed with sebum cause blockage of hair follicle openings. In this blocked openings, bacteria can develop which then produces a substance causing acne. Acne mainly occurs on face shoulder, back, chest and neck.

Furthermore acne bumps are of different types as given below:-

(Note: - A comedo occurs when a hair follicle is clogged with sebum, dead skin and bacteria.)

Whitehead: - A closed non-inflammatory comedo that has a white center.

Blackhead: - An open non-inflammatory comedo that looks black.

Papule: - An inflammatory comedo that resembles a solid, red bump.

Pustule: - An inflammatory comedo that resembles whitehead. I is dome shaped and is fragile.

Nodule: - A deep, solid, inflamed bump. A nodule can cause scarring and can be painful.

Myth 2: Acne results from poor cleansing routine
Reality: Acne is NOT caused by lack of cleansing rather even over cleaning of the skin will not heal it.

Myth 3: Masturbation leads to Acne
Reality: A completely false belief. There is NO relation whatsoever between Masturbation and Acne and or between sex and Acne.

Myth 4: Acne is Contagious
Reality: Acne CANNOT be passed on from people to people. It is not spread through touching, kissing or shaking hands with someone with Acne.

Myth 5: Oily skin triggers Acne
Reality: A greasy complexion is a symptom of Acne NOT a cause of Acne.

Causes of acne

Acne is probably the irritating condition to happen to a person. This condition is not life-threatening but will force a man or woman to waste a lot of hours in front of the mirror. Their worries are justified. A single pimple or a couple of blackheads can severely alter appearance. What are the main reasons for acne to erupt on your skin?

We will look at some of the major reasons below:

1. Genetic: There is a high chance of a child to get acne if his/her parent has it.
2. Hormone production: Androgen production activates oil producing glands in the skin.
3. Stress: Stress and depression plays a major role in increasing skin vulnerability.
4. Food: Some people who are allergic to certain foods will notice that they get acne more often.
